Easy knitted infinity scarf with a twist and crocheted edges

A handmade scarf can be simple or complicated. No matter how much time you spend making the scarf, or how complicated the design is, any hand-knitted or crocheted scarf is special.

There is really no rule about crafting and designing an infinity scarf. It is always fun to combine different techniques and ideas. In this project, I use the technique of a twisted headband and scale it up into an infinity scarf.

I also combine machine knitting and crochet. The main body of the scarf can be boring to knit, so I use an LK150 knitting machine to speed up the plain stockinette stitches. If you do not have a knitting machine, hand knitting is perfectly fine. You can add cable stitch or other patterns to the main part of the infinity scarf too.

After knitting a long rectangle, I crocheted the edges with a shell stitch (scalloped stitch) to stop the curl and add interest. There are many crocheted edge stitches on the internet. Search Pinterest to find more edge ideas and free patterns.

How to knit the twisted infinity scarf — Pattern

Yarn: 2 balls of 100 gram worsted weight yarn

Knitting machine (optional. You can just hand knit): LK150

Knitting the long rectangle (main body)

You can hand knit or use a knitting machine for this part. It is just plain stockinette stitch.

For machine knitting on an LK150

Tension 7 on both carriage and mast tension

Cast on 40 stitches (L20 to R20)

Add weight, knit until the desired length. I knit 270 rows for a shorter infinity scarf. 300 rows will be enough for an adult infinity scarf. This is on the shorter side of the infinity scarf.

The average standard for an infinity scarf is about 50 – 60 inches long and 8-10 inches wide. Adjust the stitch and row count to fit your design.

Bind off stitches and take off the machine. I use a transfer tool to knit and bind off stitch by stitch.

The crocheted shell stitch edges

I use a 4 mm crochet hook for this project.

Skip the next stitch,

3 double crochet (US term) to the next stitch,

Repeat the *( ) pattern above until the end of the scarf.

Crochet on the 2 long sides of the scarf only.

Start to see the crocheted shell stitch edges.

After crocheted the both long sides of the infinity scarf, time to make the twist.

The big twist

To sew the twist, we can fold the scarf in half lengthwise (see picture below) with the wrong side facing out.

After folding, pick up both ends. You will see 2 “C” shape channels.

Interlock the 2 C shapes. See pictures below.

Sew a line across with a yarn needle and yarn tail. Make sure to sew through all 4 layers.

Fold the scarf in half lengthwise and pick up the 2 short ends. Interlock the 2 “C” shapes.
Sew a line close to the edge. Make sure to sew through all 4 layers.

After sewing the line, simply open up and turn inside out. Now the twist is done. Steam block to even out the stitches.
