The latch tool bind-off and around the gate peg cast-off

In the last post, we showed the transfer tool bind off for machine knitting. Here is the link. Now we are going to look at the latch tool bind-off, including cast-off from the left and right sides, as well as the around the gate peg cast-off on a metal bed machine.

The latch tool bind-off creates a chain stitch row. This is a good bind-off to match the latch tool cast on or the crochet cast on.

The latch tool bind-off is also called crochet bind-off, even though I prefer using a latch tool because you can close the latch and the yarn will not get caught easily.

The video below shows the tutorial on an LK150 and Brother 260 bulky knitting machine.

The latch tool bind off – from the left side

The latch tool bind-off technique can be done from the left or right side. If your live yarn is on the left side, you can insert the latch tool through the loop and place it on the right side of the needle before latching the yarn. This just makes the procedure easier.

On the other hand, when the yarn is on the right (carriage on the right), you can insert the latch tool through the loop and come out to the left side of the needle before grabbing the live yarn and knit.

There are many variations of the latch tool bind-off. Try and see which way works the best for you.

The around the gate-pegs bind off on a metal bed knitting machine

Most metal bed knitting machines have gate pegs. The machine shown below is my Brother 260 bulky. You can bind off the same way as in the LK150, but you can do the “around the gate peg” bind-off to ensure the tension is even.

Before you latch-up and knit each stitch, make sure to place the live yarn behind the gate peg.

After the bind off, you can move all the stitches back to the A position, and the fabric will drop to the gate pegs and still hang on the knitting machine. Just lift up the fabric to remove it from the machine.
