The loop through loop bind-off and the sewing bind-off

The loop through loop bind-off and the sewing bind-off are 2 basic machine knitting cast-off methods. The loop through loop bind-off creates an edge matching the e-wrap cast on. And the sewing bind-off creates a very stretchy edge.

You need a latch tool for the loop through loop cast-off, and a yarn needle (or tapestry needle) for the sewing cast-off.

For other basic machine knitting techniques, check out our previous posts at the bottom of this blog.

Watch our video below for the “loop through loop” and the “sewing” bind-off tutorials

The loop through loop bind-off

One important step for the loop through loop bind-off is to knit a row loosely before binding off.

If your main tension is around the middle or lower number on the tension dial, you can dial up the tension 3-4 numbers to make sure the last row is knitted loosely.

If your main tension is already on the higher end (T8 or9), you can hand knit the last row and feed the yarn loosely.

The stretchy sewing bind-off with a yarn needle

This is a very stretchy bind-off when you need flexibility. As the name suggests, you will need a yarn needle to do some hand-sewing.

First, measure the yarn tail and leave about 3-4 times the width of the fabric before cutting.

Thread the yarn through a yarn needle.

Pull out all the needles to the D (holding) position and follow the steps below.

The basic repeat is to thread the yarn 2 stitches forward (back to the front) and 1 stitch backward (front to the back).

Every stitch is worked twice except the first stitch.
