How to create textured knitting with a simple sewing technique

Sewing and knitting can be combined. I was inspired by a knitted pillow with 3-D like texture. It is just done by sewing up at a regular interval. So I try to recreate the stitch here.

Steps of creating textured knitting by sewing

The first step is to knit a piece of plain stockinette. You can do it by hand-knit, or on any knitting machine. I use my LK150 and worsted weight yarn to knit a rectangle.

The second step is to fold the knitted piece horizontally into equal distances. The fewer folds you have, the higher the 3-D texture will be. See the picture below.

The beginning and end of the length can be folded in (and sewn) to create nice finished edges.

Then decide the width of each diamond shape you like. Use binder clips or sewing clips to hold the places. Adjust the distance as needed. I find this is the easiest way to get the look you like.

If you want to be precise, you can calculate the stitches and row numbers and divide equally to find out the exact point to sew up.

The last thing is to sew up the points where the binder clips are. Use a sewing needle and sewing thread, or thin sturdy yarn of matching color.

You can find the small sewing clips in the sewing supply section.

Tips

It is much easier to make than it looks. Since it is folded fabric, the length is shortened significantly after sewing up. For a square pillow, I will knit double the size of the final length. The width is shortened but not as bad.

If you want to mark on the knitting piece, you can use a disappearing ink or water-soluble ink (from sewing supply) so you don’t have to worry about leaving marks.

There are many other sewing techniques that can be applied to knitting. I will post more in the future. Happy knitting.
