Machine Knitting basics – Cast on with waste yarn, ravel cord, and e-wrap
If you are just starting out with machine knitting, it can be difficult to find information to learn the basics. Most knitting machines are second-hand, and different manufacturers have different knobs and buttons for the same function. That is why we are starting the basic machine knitting technique series on the CreativeTien YouTube channel. The first lesson is the basic cast on, including the use of waste yarn, ravel cord, and e-wrap.
Most machine knitting techniques can be applied to different brands of knitting machines. Since the LK150 is a popular knitting machine, I will demonstrate techniques on this machine a lot. I will also try to work on the Brother standard and bulky gauge in the future.
Watch the video below for the basics of threading through the tension mast, casting on with waste yarn, ravel cord, e-wrap, and direct e-wrap casting on. We will show different ways of casting on, casting off, increasing, decreasing, and different stitches in future videos.
I believe visual learning is the easiest way in today’s world. Enjoy and happy knitting!

Cast on with waste yarn and ravel cord
For this method, you will need some waste yarn, main yarn, and ravel cord. A ravel cord is just a smooth thread or yarn, so it can be pulled out later to separate the waste yarn. Usually, it is made of nylon or polyester, but you can also use a piece of cotton yarn or cotton thread.
There are 3 parts to this method of casting on. You start with waste yarn, then knit a row of ravel cords, and finally start knitting with the main yarn. See the picture below.
