Machine knitting a loop stitch for big texture

The loop stitch looks like a shag carpet with piles of loops. It can be a dramatic statement for your winter garment, accessories, or home decor. You can also knit just one loop row near the edge and create a fringe-looking trim.

The loop stitch can be done with traditional knitting needles or a crochet hook, but it is harder to find a machine-knitted version.

Here we are doing hand-manipulated stitch on an LK150 knitting machine. The loop stitches are mainly done by creating loops and knitting them back to the B positions. We alternate 1 row of loop stitches with 1 row of plain stitches. You can change the density of the loops by spacing them farther apart.

Cast on

I started with 20 stitches of the e-warp cast on.

Knit 2 rows.

The carriage is on the right side.

Loop stitch

Pull out the first needle on the right until the yarn is behind the latch.

Wrap the working yarn on the left index finger 2 times,

Place the 2 strands of yarn on the open latch,

And knit back by pulling the needle back to the B position (upper working).

Pull out the needle again until the 2 strands of yarn are behind the latch.

Place the working yarn on the open latch.

Knit back to B position. (pull the needle back to B, just like before).

Now this loop stitch, or double loop stitch, is done. Repeat for the rest stitches on the same row.

Every needle will be knitted twice. Once with the 2 loops, and the second time with the working yarn in the latch.

Knit 1 plain stitch row

The next row will be plain knitting. First, the carriage is on the wrong side because we just hand-knit one row. So lift the carriage and move to the left side where the working yarn is.

Thread the yarn through the carriage.

Knit 1 row.

Repeat 1 loop stitch row and 1 plain row until the desired length.

End with 1 plain row.

Bind off.

Now we have just created the loop stitch fabric! Isn’t that impressive?
