Easy No-sew Face Mask with a T-shirt or Fleece (free pdf download)
We are trying to make DIY face mask easier so we always have enough at hand. Here is a very simple face mask design without the need for a sewing machine. Watch the video tutorial at the bottom of this blog.

Fabric choice
You can use a T-shirt, interlocking knit, or fleece to make this mask. It should be stretchy so it can go behind the ears. The 100 % cotton is usually recommended for sewing a mask, but it tends to be less stretchy than the cotton blend fabric.
The interlocking knit is usually thicker than a T-shirt. It does not curl so much on the cut edge.
For a T-shirt or interlocking knit, 2 layers will be just right. For fleece, one layer is enough because of the thickness. The 2 layers for the ear loop keep the mask stronger and last longer.
The stretch test
One direction of the knit fabric is usually more stretchy than the other. We use the stretchy side horizontally so it will stretch to fit behind the ears. Place the pattern on folded fabric matching the folding line.
Steps
Cut the pattern and lay on top of the folded fabric matching the folding line. Make sure the fabric stretches well horizontally.
Trace the pattern on the backside of the fabric. Pin and cut the fabric. The folding line should be still connected.
Turn the right side out and you are done.
Wire
Wire for the nose area is optional. You can use a twisty tie, gardening wire, jewelry wire, or straightened paper clip.
Place the wire between the 2 layers of fabric. Hand sew around it or just tape it (maybe using duct tape or packing tape). You can take off the wire before the laundry.
Pro and con of the T-shirt mask
Pro: Easy and quick to make. No sewing machine required. Comfortable to wear. Easy to replace. Reusable and washable.
Con: It can stretch out of shape after a while. The woven cotton keeps the shape better and tends to last longer. It is hard to seal well without the nose shaping wire.
